Can anyone tell me about chroming oven racks? I've got new ones on the way and mine are too nasty to tell what they are SUPPOSED to look like. Are they chromable? Will a chrome finish hold up to this type of use?
Thanks,
Michelle

You can chrome them and they'll look really beautiful, showroom new.
After you cook with them, they'll take on an antique bronze look and then it'll be like you never chromed them at all.
I'd say if there's rust, get them rechromed. If they're just bronze colored without surface rust, clean them up and just 'pretend' that you chromed them.

Whether I chrome or not depends on the new one's appearance. My old one were so rusted that I don't think that chroming them would have helped. If fact, in some places they were almost completely rusted through.

Thanks Mark! That's exactly what I wanted to know. And, exactly what I'll do!

Hi, I had my racks rechromed - here's a pic:

I did not rechrome the rack runners - you can probably see them in the picture - because the effort to remove them was greater than the value of having them rechromed. But I expect that, like Mark says, my racks will eventually turn the same color as the runners and it will look just fine. But, I had to rechrome at least the racks because they were pretty ugly. Think I paid $35 per rack. You will probably want to just clean yours up with Brillo or SOS pads, put them in the oven, and see what you think. You will know if it's going to be worth it to you or not.

Any suggestions on how to make the racks slide easier?

wash the racks down, dry & then polish the frame using 0004 steelwool, where ever there will be metalvto metal contact, just buff it up with the steelwool and do the same to the oven tracks. you'll have smooth easy gliding and the steel wool in the 0004 grade is a wonderful cleaning and general maintenance tool for all the aluminum cookware too.
